Autonomy / Decentralization
Many regions are nowadays experiencing a drastic change in their traditional form due to globalisation trends and, more specifically, to economic globalisation. Some regions consider autonomy as an opportunity to put an end to their belonging to a nation they consider in many aspects (economic, political and especially cultural) as an obstacle. As for Nation-States, they increasingly attempt at regaining their role as socio-economic integration forces by means of decentralisation procedures.. This section offers a critical perspective to a selection of articles which explore the different strategies set by Nation-States and regions in response to globalisation processes.

The crisis of the Spanish system

Author : El País
The Catalan issue has shattered the essential agreement of our democracy: territorial unity based on decentralization and self-government. It has also created enormous doubts about the quality of our political model.
More than once I have heard the assertion that the wave of anti-establishment sentiment that has affected many countries over the last decade, expressing itself through various forms of populism, nationalism, xenophobia and other radical assaults against the established order, had not affected Spain substantially, or at least not sufficiently to shake the structures of power in any significant way.
