Auroville (city of dawn) is located in northern Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu, India. The city was founded by Mirra Alfassa, better known as the Mother, spiritual companion of the philosopher Sri Aurobindo. It is intended as a place for universal community life, where men and women learn to live in peace, above all creeds, politics or nationalities. The plans for the construction of Auroville were drawn up by French architect Roger Anger. When it was inaugurated on 28 February 1968, with the president of India and representatives from 124 countries in attendance, participants placed a handful of soil from their country in an urn as a symbol of global brotherhood.
