William Jefferson Clinton (born August 19, 1946) was the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Clinton won the 1992 presidential election against Republican George H. W. Bush. In the 1996 presidential election, Clinton was re-elected. Internationally, his priorities included reducing trade barriers and mediating the Northern Ireland and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.
On February 1, 2005, he was picked by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to head the United Nations 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami relief and reconstruction effort.
