Hailing the peaceful Kosovo assembly elections held on Saturday, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today congratulated the province's people, especially Kosovo Serbs who went to the polls despite pressure to stay home.
“The Secretary-General calls on all of Kosovo's political leaders to respect the result of the election,” a UN spokesman said in a statement released in New York. “He looks to them to cooperatively and quickly form a new government which, in close collaboration with UNMIK (the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo), will work for the benefit of all, importantly including Kosovo's minority communities.”
While noting with disappointment the low turnout among the Kosovo Serb community, Mr. Annan praised “those who voted and those who stood as candidates for their courage in the face of severe contrary pressure.”
The statement also commended UNMIK Police, the Kosovo Police Service and the multinational Kosovo force (KFOR) for guaranteeing a safe and secure environment.
